Opal, the October birthstone, was in ancient times, considered one of the most valuable gems because it was believed to possess the powers of all other gemstones due to the various colors inside the stone. Opal’s main characteristic is the shifting colors inside the stone, known as “play-of-color.” Opal is found primarily in Australia, Ethiopia, Mexico, Brazil, and Peru. Mexico produces a rare form of translucent orange opal called fire opal. Opals have very high water content and non-crystalline structure, which makes them more delicate. They may dry out and crack and they must be stored carefully away from heat. We offer a selection of opal pendants, opal rings, and opal earrings in classic settings that showcase opal’s famous play-of-color.
